Bread & Better Films, a division of Big Time Decent Productions, has begun principal
photography on Adapting, a 6x30 drama for AMI, shooting in and around Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast, with a premiere slated for Summer 2026.
Adapting is a sharp, irreverent family drama about a widowed father and his twin
teenage daughters navigating grief, identity, and small-town chaos as they attempt to find their place in a messy, unpredictable world.
The series stars Threnody Tsai as Lennon, a teenager with cerebral palsy, alongside Kurt Long and Junnicia Lagoutin, and an ensemble cast that reflects the diversity and lived experience of the disability community. Inspired by the lives of Rachael & Garner Ransom, Adapting brings a raw, unfiltered perspective to disability—one rarely seen on television.
“Adapting reminds us that everyone, disabled or not, goes through periods of self discovery,”said Rachael Ransom and Garner Ransom, whose lived experience inspired the series. “It’s vulnerable, bold, messy and beautiful all at the same time.”
Directed by Kyle Rideout (Adventures in Public School, Eadweard), the series blends
grounded performances with a visually vibrant, naturalistic style.
Adapting aligns with AMI’s mandate to amplify underrepresented voices and push the
boundaries of inclusive storytelling.
“A series like Adapting is why AMI exists,” said Cara Nye, Director of Content Development and Production at AMI. “Rachael, Garner, Threnody and the rest of this incredible cast and crew have created something smart, funny, and brutally honest. Inclusive and edgy, it never asks for your sympathy, just your attention!”
“I don’t say this lightly, but Adapting is one of the most meaningful projects I’ve had the chance to work on,” said Matthew Shewchuk, Founder and CEO of Big Time Decent
Productions. “It’s challenged us creatively—and if we get it right, it has the potential to help shape where television goes next.”
A New Model for the Industry
Drawing inspiration from emerging artist-led equity movements internationally, Big Time Decent Productions is implementing a progressive production model that emphasizes:
Meaningful revenue participation for creatives
Transparent, collaborative production practices
Long-term opportunity for artists and crew
This approach reflects a shift toward a more balanced production ecosystem—one that recognizes contribution beyond traditional hierarchies while remaining sustainable for independent production.
“This isn’t just about representation on screen—it’s about fundamentally rethinking how productions operate from the ground up,” added Shewchuk. “We’re building a model that prioritizes equity, sustainability, and real inclusion for everyone involved.”
About the Series
Set in the fictional coastal town of Halfway Bay, BC, Adapting blends biting humor with emotional honesty, exploring themes of disability, adolescence, sexuality, and family dynamics. The series follows Lennon and her twin sister Lola as they attempt to redefine themselves in a town where everyone knows their history—and no one lets them forget it.
